KENNESAW, Ga. – Two Kennesaw State men’s golfers qualified for the U. S. Open Sectional Qualifiers after advancing from the 18-hole local qualifier hosted at the Marietta Country Club (6,793, par-70) on Monday afternoon.
In a field of 144 competitors, senior Matt Nagy and junior Ben Greene were among nine qualifying spots to advance into sectional qualifying at the River Club in Suwanee, Ga., on June 4. Nagy posted a 66, -4 while teammate Greene turned in a 67, -3 to make the cut.
The pair of Owls joined the likes of medalist Mitchell Krywulycz (64, -4), a former standout at Augusta State, Georgia Tech’s Anders Albertson (65, -5), Curt Sanders, Richard Spangler, Richard Swift and Erik Flores who all posted a 67, -3 while Jay McLuen won a playoff to round out the qualifiers.
For Nagy, this is his fourth consecutive year to move on to the sectional qualifying portion of the U.S. Open, having punched his ticket to the big dance in 2009 as the Buena Vista, Ga., native was amongst the field at the 2009 U.S. Open held at Bethpage Black as just a sophomore.
Nagy and Greene, plus the remainder of the Kennesaw State men’s golf team will travel to Ann Arbor, Michigan to compete in the NCAA Regional, hosted at the University of Michigan Course on May 17-19. The Owls are the No.7 seed in the 13-team field, with the top five teams advancing to NCAA Division I Men’s Championship, May 29-June 3 at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
