JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - The No. 5 women's tennis team (14-8, 6-4 A-Sun) saw their hopes for an Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament crown come to an end today at the hands of No. 4 Stetson (14-6, 7-3 A-Sun), dropping their quarterfinal match by a score of 4-0.
The doubles set the tone early, as the Hatters raced to wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to forge ahead to a 1-0 lead. The Owls would be unable to recover, as Stetson took the No. 4 and No. 5 matches to put them one match from the win, followed by Sara Lazarevic's 6-4, 6-1 win over Owl No. 1
Vera Shkundina. The remaining matches were halted, with all three Owls left on court locked in tight battles with their Stetson opponents.
The match marks the end of the career of Shkundina, a four-time postseason award winner for the Owls. This season, she was one of only two players in the conference to receive a unanimous All-Conference First Team selection. Over her four year career, Shkundina set the career mark in singles wins with 112. She played every match in her career at the No. 1 spot in singles.
With the loss, the Owls move to 0-3 all-time in the postseason during the Division I era. The Owls also fell to Stetson a year ago by the same score. The Owls will return six of seven players from this year's roster.
