BRASELTON, Ga. – The Kennesaw State men’s golf team finished third at the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship after carding a 894, +30 54-hole total on the Legends at Chateau Elan golf course.
Play was delayed two and half hours due to heavy rain in the area. With a saturated course and rain still falling leisurely, play began. Needing to post an even round or better, the Owls came up short after turning in a 311, +23 on Wednesday to finish as the second runner-up.
The top performer for the Black and Gold was senior Matt Nagy who finished ninth. Posting a 77, +5 on the final day, and a 223, +7 for the tournament, Nagy recorded his second consecutive A-Sun Championship top-10 finish with back-to-back birdies to close out his final round.
Sophomore Jonathan Klotz finished tied for 13th after carding a 73-74-79=226, +10. Ben Greene ended up tied for 15th as the senior played the best over the course of the final 36-holes. Posting an 81-70-76=227, +11, Greene’s final two rounds keep the Owls from falling into fourth place.
In his first A-Sun Championship appearance, freshman Jimmy Beck placed tied for 18th. Falling out of the top on the final 18-holes, Beck carded a 74-73-81=228, +12 to end play. Sophomore Kelby Burton concluded his first postseason tournament with a tie for 25th, shooting a 73-78-79=230, +14.
North Florida held on to capture the team title with an 875, +11 total. Beating out East Tennessee State (879, +15) by four strokes, the Ospreys will represent the A-Sun as conference champions at the NCAA Regional.
Sam Ryder of Stetson claimed individual medalist honors. Opening the day in third place, Ryder fired the days’ lowest round of 71, -1 to jump the Ospreys’ tandem of Kevin Aylwin and Sean Dale.
The Owls will return to action on May 17-19 when the team competes in the Men’s 74th Annual Regional Championship based on the team’s ranking. The team will await their destination as six possible venues wait, Grandover Resort in Greensboro, North Carolina, The University of Georgia Golf Course in Athens, Georgia, University of Michigan Golf Course in Ann Arbor, Michigan, The Club at Olde Stone in Bowling Green, Kentucky, Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club in Norman, Oklahoma, and the Stanford Golf Course in Palo Alto, California.
