BRASELTON, Ga. – The Kennesaw State men’s golf team concluded round one of the 2012 Atlantic Sun Championship in third place after shooting a 291, +3 at the Legends at Chateau Elan Golf Course.
The leader for the Owls at the conclusion of 18-holes is the senior
Matt Nagy. Nagy posted a 71, -1 to tie for fourth and be one of only seven individuals to register a sub-par score.
The recruiting class of 2011 came up big for the Owls in the opening round as both sophomores
Kelby Burton and
Jonathan Klotz carded a 73, +1 to tie for 10th. Each individual picked up their game on the back nine as Burton registered four birdies, while Klotz tallied two.
Freshman
Jimmy Beck who is competing in his first post-season championship shot a 74, +2 and is tied for 16th, whereas
Ben Greene is tied for 44th after turning in an 81, +9.
"I am overall pleased with our performance from start to finish," head coach Jay Moseley said. "Our goal is to stay patient as I expect the scores to rise over the next 36-holes and create some seperation between the top teams. If we play our best we have a chance to make it out on top."
No. 41 Kennesaw trails No. 8 North Florida (287, -1) by four strokes, and second place East Tennessee State (288, E) by three strokes. The Owls are in third place, with Florida Gulf Coast (292, +4) in fourth and USC Upstate (299, +11) rounding out the top five.
Rhys Enoch of ETSU and Sean Dale of UNF are both tied for first in the individual race at 68, -4. Enoch’s teammate Spencer Lawson sits third at 70, -2, with Nagy and quartet of individuals tied four fourth, one stroke back.
