MARIETTA, Ga. - The Kennesaw State women's tennis team (14-7, 6-3 A-Sun) closed out the regular season on a high note today, downing the visiting Jacksonville Dolphins (6-12, 4-5 A-Sun) to finish the conference season having won six of their last seven Atlantic Sun matches.
They will take that momentum into the conference tournament next weekend at ETSU when they face Stetson.
The Owls were led once again by senior
Vera Shkundina, who played her final home match of her stellar four-year career. She holds almost all of KSU's records, having amassed over 110 singles wins over her four-year career. She added to that total today with a routine 6-4, 6-3 win over Jacksonville's Aline Staudt at the No. 1 spot, where Shkundina has played every match in her four-year career. She also paired with junior
Therese Lagerkvist for an 8-3 triumph at No. 2 doubles.
The Owls swept through the doubles portion of the match, and ran to straight set victories in five of six singles matches. Of particular note was the victory of
Virginie Stein, who finishes her freshman regular season with a perfect 9-0 record in the A-Sun, and an overall record of 18-3. Additionally, freshman
Jana Hueckinghaus picked up her fourth "double bagel" of the conference season with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Virginia Iwinski of the Dolphins. The match was clinched when junior
Kelsey Kennedy used a consistent ground game to wear down Ronnie Spencer at the No. 6 spot, 6-1, 6-2. Also picking up a victory for the Owls was No. 2,
Alexandra Apostu, who finishes the regular season with a 16-3 record at the No. 2 spot.
The conference tournament begins on Friday, April 20. Match times will be announced later this week by the conference office. The tournament takes place on the campus of East Tennessee State University. The Owls and Hatters will be the #4 and #5 seeds in the tournament in some order, regardless of the outcome of the Stetson/Lipscomb match today.
