KENNESAW, Ga. – The Kennesaw State baseball team hung 17 runs on Stetson to win 17-2 on Friday night at Stilwell Stadium. With the win, senior Josh Carr collected his eighth straight win for tops in the country.
Stetson struck first with a run in the first inning on a Ben Carhart RBI single. The Hatters would get four hits in the inning, which would be the only multi-hit inning for the squad as Carr only allowed six hits and two earned runs in six and a third innings of work.
The Owls got the run right back in their half of the frame. Leading off with a single, and advancing to second on his 22nd stolen base of the season, Aaron Dobbs would tie the game on an Andy Almonte single.
Kennesaw State broke the tie in the bottom of the second when Chris McGowan scored on a wild pitch by Hatters starter Austin Perez. Max Pentecost and Jacob Bruce advanced on the wild pitch, and Pentecost wound up scoring on a slow roller to second by Dobbs to put the Black and Gold up 3-1. Adding another run on a bloop single by Peyton Hart, the Owls would knock Perez from the game after throwing only one and a third innings.
Each team would add a run in the succeeding innings to make it a 7-2 contest. Still dealing on the mound, Josh Carr headed into the fifth inning with five strikeouts in search of the win. He would receive more run support from his offense in the fifth, as the Owls would explode for five runs on homeruns from both McGowan and Almonte to go up 12-2.
After a scoreless frame in the field for the Owls, McGowan returned to the plate in the sixth inning to hit his second homerun of the night, and his sixth of the season. With a 12 run lead, head coach Mike Sansing would pull his ace and bring Caden Fergusson into the game.
Not allowing a hit in 1.2 innings of relief, Fergusson held the Hatters at bay while the offense continued to pile up the runs. Accumulating three more in the eighth inning, including two on a triple by Jacob Bruce, the Owls would go on to take game one of the three game series, 17-2.
Game two is slated for Saturday at 2:00 p.m., as Zak Griffith will make his second start of the season for the Owls.
