NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. - The Kennesaw State women’s golf team made history on Tuesday after capturing the 2012 Atlantic Sun Conference Championship for the first time ever with a 292-284-295=871, +7.
After taking over the lead from East Tennessee State on Tuesday, the Owls were able to fend off the Buccaneers final round surge and win the first KSU women’s championship since the 2009 women’s soccer team captured the title.
The early pressure by ETSU sparked the Owls to rally, as they fell behind two strokes after the first round. The Black and Gold answered back, bolstering a team score of 284 on Tuesday that gave them a six-stroke advantage going into the final round.
Making for great theatrics, KSU allowed ETSU within one-stroke of the lead before putting the Bucs to rest and winning the event by four strokes.
"This was a phenomenal win for this program," head coach Rhyll Brinsmead said. "Today was a round full of momentum shifts. I could not be more proud of how the team gutted it out. It wasn't pretty, but we got it done and this team deserves every bit of this."
In the end, it was the team’s veteran, junior Ket Preamchuen, who led the Owls with a 72, E to finish even for the tournament. Preamchuen finished fourth overall, just one stroke ahead of fellow teammate Ines Lescudier, who led the team in the final round with a two-under-par finish.
Lescudier picked up her game after her first round struggles. Tallying 11 birdies in her final 36-holes, the freshman recorded her top finish as an Owl in fifth place. The third member to join the top-10 ranks was Lea Charpier who tied for seventh, after finishing with a 74-71-74=219, +3.
Also of note for the Owls was the +6 tally of freshman Kaew Preamchuen, who was just one stroke shy of a top-ten finish after carding a 72-73-77=222, +6. Rounding out the victory was Molly Winnett, placing 31st for the tournament with a 76-81-79=236, +20.
For the second straight day the Owls played the three hardest holes on the course better than the opposition, by posting an even par for the four counted scores on holes 10-13-18.
Kennesaw will now wait to hear their destination for the 2012 NCAA Women’s Golf Regional on May 10-12. The Owls will head to any of the three venues, Penn State Golf Course in State College, Pennsylvania, The Ohio State University Golf Club in Columbus, Ohio, or Colorado Nationals Golf Club in Erie, Colorado.
