NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. – The Kennesaw State women’s golf team posted their second best team score of 284, -4, during the second round of the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship on Tuesday to take a six stroke lead into the final round at the Venetian Bay Golf Club.
Freshman Ines Lescudier led the charge for the Owls, as she posted the second best round in KSU history and the best A-Sun Championship round of 68, -4 to move into 10th place. Lescudier opened the round tied for 25th, but after birding four of her opening seven holes, the native of Marseille, France put the Owls atop the leaderboard.
The top Owl after 36-holes is the junior Ket Preamchuen. After posting a 72, E to sit two-under-par for the tournament, Preamchuen is tied for fourth, just ahead of two fellow Black and Gold members.
In sixth place, in a deadlock tie are Lea Charpier and Kaew Preamchuen. Each individual bolsters a 145, +1 total to make four Kennesaw State individuals in the top-10. Junior Molly Winnett is tied for 26th after carding an 81, +9 on the second 18-holes of play.
KSU was able to distance themselves by taken advantage of the hardest holes on the course. Holes 4-5-9 played at a combined +1.65 for the day. The Owls were able to play the three holes at three-under-par for the round. Also making use of the team’s stellar long game, the women played the courses four par-fives at a collective seven-under-par.
"What a great performance," head coach Rhyll Brinsmead said. "We got under early and fought to stay there all day. Ines’ round was stellar our play one through four was very consistent. We needed this team score to propel us into the lead heading into the final round."
The Black and Gold have never taken a 36-hole lead into the final round of play. Looking to dethrone three time A-Sun Champions Stetson, and win the schools first ever women’s Championship title, the Owls will have to hold off East Tennessee State. The Buccaneers are currently at 582, +6 and trail the Owls by six strokes. Presently with the top two individuals in the field, Gabriella Wahl (140, -4) remains the medalist leader with teammate Sian Evans just three stokes back.
Mercer University (587, +11) made a second round push to overtake Stetson (588, +12) for third place, while Jacksonville (620, +44) and Florida Gulf Coast are tied to round out the events top-five.
Kennesaw will tee off in the final round on Wednesday at 9:30 a.m., and will be paired with ETSU and Mercer. For live stats of the A-Sun Championship, visit Golfstat.com. For updates throughout the round, you can follow the team on Twitter @KSUOwlsWmnsGolf.
