TALLAHASEE, Fla. – Senior
Jeff Karlsson tied his previously set school record of a 65, -6 in round one of the Seminole Intercollegiate, as the team finished tied for fourth, after posting a 283, -1.
“I felt good about my game even after getting off to a slow start,” Karlsson said. “I knew that if I could just keep it going I would be okay. The course fits my eye and I fell comfortable on the green, and all that combined led to a great round.”
Karlsson is alone at the top of the leaderboard as he followed his 2011 success at the Southwood Golf Course with a record setting round. After opening the first seven holes at one-over-par, Karlsson played the next 10-holes at eight-under-par.
“Jeff’s back nine was indescribable,” head coach Jay Moseley said. “This was one of those times where a golfer gets in the zone, and for him to do what he did making birdies and eagles was phenomenal. His round was the difference maker and helped salvage the round for us.”
Ben Greene had a solid round of three-under-par heading into the final two holes, but after posting back-to-back double bogeys, the junior dropped to 72, +1 to tie for 30th. Senior
Matt Nagy and freshman
Jimmy Beck are each tied for 42nd, carding a 73, +2, while
Kelby Burton rounded out the scoring for the Owls with a 74, +3 to conclude tied for 52nd.
The five starters for the Black and Gold combined for 21 holes of sub-par play, as the team played the par-fives of Southwood at six-under for the day.
“I was proud of the guys performance today as we prepared well heading in, and we felt good about the course and our chances,” Moseley said. “We played well, but obviously we would like to finish it off better. If we have a complete round tomorrow we will be in good position heading into the final on Sunday.”
In individual competition, sophomore
Jonathan Klotz finished the first 18-holes tied for 24th. Klotz, who was a pivotal factor in last year’s 2011 Atlantic Sun championship run is seeing his first action of the spring season.
Host school No. 28 ranked Florida State and No. 8 Georgia Tech are the leaders in the clubhouse after day one as each squad shot a 278, -6. Conference foe Mercer sits third, just two strokes ahead of the Owls and Charlotte tied for fourth.
Kennesaw will tee off on Saturday at 8:47 a.m. E.T., and will be paired with Florida State, Georgia Tech and Mercer. Live stats of round two can be viewed at Golfstat.com. For updates throughout the round, you can follow the team on Twitter @KSUOwlsMensGolf.
