MARIETTA, Ga. - The women's tennis team stretched their winning streak to four with two victories today at Fair Oaks Tennis Center, downing Young Harris, 6-1, before knocking off Jacksonville State, 5-2. With the wins, the Owls improve to 10-6 this spring.
In the first matchup of the day, the Owls took the doubles point from Young Harris (11-4) with wins at No. 1 and No. 2. The team of
Alexandra Apostu and
Virginie Stein took out Charlotte Dawson and Jane Plevako at the top spot, 8-3. At No. 2,
Vera Shkundina and
Therese Lagerkvist downed Charlotte Moreau and Katie Bryant, 8-5.
In singles against the Mountain Lions, the Owls won at the top 5 spots in straight sets, with wins by Shkundina, Stein,
Jana Hueckinghaus, Lagerkvist and
Kelsey Kennedy, who handled Bryant 6-1, 6-1. The visitors picked up their only point when KSU did not field a player in the No. 6 slot.
In the afternoon matchup with the Gamecocks (5-14), the Owls took all three doubles matches, as the duo of Hueckinghaus and freshman
Tamara Plocher rebounded from a loss against Young Harris with a resounding 8-0 triumph over Tomlin and Cmiljic of Jacksonville State. The singles would be a routine affair at the top three spots, with Shkundina, Stein and Hueckinghaus all picking up straight set wins to put the match out of reach. Lagerkvist was stretched to three sets before prevailing over Bizinos, 3-6, 6-3, 1-0(6).
The Owls will return to the court on Saturday when they take on Mercer at noon in an Atlantic Sun Conference contest.
