Inside Owls Softball- 3/27

ATLANTA- The Kennesaw State Owls are back in action on Wednesday evening, when they face the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets at Mewborn Field at 6:00 p.m. The two squads split last season’s home-and-home series.

The Owls (16-15) have dropped three straight games, coming off of a weekend in which they were swept in a three-game series by Georgia Southern at Bailey Park.

Georgia Tech (19-16) will visit the Owls next Wednesday night, Apr. 4, as part of Lexi’s Night, with donations and ticket profits from that evening going to the Lexi Kaiser Foundation, which raises money for kids with exceptional needs.

Listen to All of the Action Live: Free, live audio will be available for Wednesday night’s game via KSU All Access, at www.KSUOwls.com/Showcase. Scott Lipsky and Jenna Closner will have all of the action. Fans who want to watch Wednesday evening’s game can do so on the Georgia Tech All Access, the Yellow Jackets’ subscription video service.

About the Match-up: The Yellow Jackets lead the all-time series against the Owls, 9-5, with the coming into Wednesday with a mark of just 2-5 in road games against Tech. They won their only two games away from home against the Ramblin’ Wreck on Apr. 30, 1992, when they swept a doubleheader by the scores of 3-0 and 5-1 in the first two meetings between the two programs.

The Black and Gold defeated Georgia Tech, 4-1, on Feb. 23 of last year at Bailey Park, with the big blast coming in the bottom of the third, when Sharon Swanson hit a grand slam to give the Owls all the runs they would need in the victory. Swanson would also homer against Tech at Mewborn Field on Apr. 6, but this time it simply served to break-up a no-hit bid in the seventh inning, with the Owls falling, 6-1.

About Georgia Tech:
The Yellow Jackets, like the Owls, are in the midst of a three-game losing streak, having most recently been swept in a doubleheader at No. 8-ranked Louisiana Lafayette, 12-11 and 10-2 on Thursday, after dropping a, 2-1 at Louisiana State last Tuesday. They are led at the plate by senior shortstop and 2011 All-American Kelsi Weseman, who enters Wednesday batting .352 with six home runs and 19 RBI. They are anchored in the pitcher’s circle by junior Hope Rush, who is 12-10 with a 2.42 earned run average.

Swanson, Henderson Among the Nation’s Best: In the latest NCAA statistical update, which was released on Tuesday, Owls sophomore Amanda Henderson found herself fourth in the country in strikeouts per seven innings with a sterling rate of 10.9, while her 123 total strikeouts is the 25th best in the land. Swanson has hit 10 home runs this season, which is good enough to put in a tie for 17th in the nation in that category.

Vollmer Finds Her Stride: Owls senior catcher Lindsay Vollmer was in a little bit of a swoon at the plate recently, having gone just 3-for-24 with just one RBI over a nine-game stretch from Mar. 3-10 after starting out the season on a .441 clip, but seems to have found her swing again. The Scottsdale, Ariz., native went 6-for-12 in four games for the Owls last week, hitting her sixth home run of the season and extending her hitting streak to seven games.

Jessica Has Pitched A Lot: Cross made her 98th career appearance in the pitcher’s circle on Saturday against Georgia Southern, moving her into fifth place on the program’s all-time list. Only Brittany Matthews (105) has pitched in more games for the Owls at the Division I level.

The Long Ball It Is: Kennesaw State enters Wednesday tied for the lead with Lipscomb in the Atlantic Sun Conference with 25 home runs. They have homered in 17 of 31 games this season, and have more than one roundtripper in five contests during 2012.
