MARIETTA, Ga. - The KSU women's tennis team picked up their second consecutive Atlantic Sun Conference victory with a 6-1 win over Lipscomb (4-8, 1-2 A-Sun). The Owls swept the doubles and the top five singles spots for the second day in a row.
In the doubles, the Owls (8-6, 2-2 A-Sun) picked up routine wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, while the No. 3 pairing of
Jana Hueckinghaus and
Kelsey Kennedy, playing together for the first time, had to fight back from 5-2 down before prevailing, 8-6, over the Lipscomb duo of Alyssa Bellini and Samantha Bowman.
"We had a very solid weekend, and I am very proud of the way the women competed today," said Head Coach #Jeff Kutac". "We're going in the right direction, and will continue to work hard and improve."
In the singles, Hueckinghaus pitched a shutout for the second day in a row, winning 6-0, 6-0 over Elizabeth Keevil at No. 4. Hueckinghaus has now won 24 consecutive games. Missing the shutout by one game was Owl No. 1
Vera Shkundina, who added to her record number of career victories with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Bellini. Also picking up straight set wins were
Alexandra Apostu,
Virginie Stein, and
Therese Lagerkvist. The wins were extra special for Hueckinghaus and Stein, whose families made the trip from Germany to watch the weekend's matches.
The Owls will take this week to prepare for three matches next weekend. On Friday, the Owls have a doubleheader against Young Harris College and Jacksonville State. The Owls and Young Harris will face off at 10:00 a.m. while the Gamecocks and Owls will begin at 2:00 p.m.
