JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Kennesaw State baseball team concluded its weekend series against Jacksonville on Sunday winning the first game, 10-3, but wound up falling in game two, 7-6, in seven innings.
The day’s results now move Kennesaw State to 14-10 (4-2 A-Sun) for the season, while Jacksonville moves to 11-14 (1-2 A-Sun) on the year. The 4-2 start in conference play matches KSU’s best start in A-Sun history, and the 4-2 mark also has the Owls in a tie with Belmont for second place in the standings.
In game one, the Owls jumped out to a quick 6-1 lead after five innings.
Junior
Ronnie Freeman opened up the scoring in the top of the third inning with an RBI single. The Black and Gold extended its lead in the top of the fourth thanks to RBI hits from senior
Aaron Dobbs and Freeman. The big hit of the inning came from junior
Andy Almonte as he hit a two-RBI double to left field.
Peyton Hart eventually made the score 6-1 after his RBI single up the middle in the fifth.
That is all the support sophomore Steve Janas would need as he went seven strong innings only allowing three earned runs, while striking out six.
In game two, which was scheduled for only seven innings, Kennesaw State trailed 4-1 after four innings. Dobbs sparked the Owls comeback as he hit a two-RBI triple in the top of the fifth inning to bring KSU to within 4-3. The Black and Gold still trailed 7-5 heading into the top of the seventh, but senior
Andy Chriscaden hit a clutch two-out, two-run homerun to tie the game at 7-7. Unfortunately for the Owls, Jacksonville responded in the bottom half of the seventh by ending the game with a walk off double.
Even with the loss in game two, the Black and Gold took their fourth straight series as they haven’t lost a series since Feb. 24-26 when they dropped two-of-three to Memphis.
A big reason for the Owls quick start to conference play has been the superior play of Dobbs. In his last seven games, the Warner Robbins, Ga. native is hitting .500 (15-for-30) with seven walks, seven stolen bases and 11 runs scored.
Kennesaw State is back in action on Mar. 27 as it travels to Cullowhee, N.C. to take on Western Carolina.
