MARIETTA, Ga. - The women's tennis team had a dominating performance today at the Fair Oaks Tennis Center to hand Belmont (5-7, 2-1 Atlantic Sun Conference) their first conference loss, by a score of 6-1. The Owls (7-6, 1-2 A-Sun) swept the doubles with ease before racing to straight set victories at the top 5 spots to put the match away.
In the doubles, the Owls dropped only five games in total, as they swept the Bruins to take the early 1-0 lead and harness the momentum heading into the singles. The Owls never let go of that momentum, as several Owls raced to early leads and finished strong. Pitching a shutout on the day was freshman
Jana Hueckinghaus, who rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Carolyn Caire of the Bruins at the No. 4 spot. Also picking up routine victories were
Alexandra Apostu, who now leads the team in victories this spring with 11, as well as
Vera Shkundina,
Virginie Stein, and
Therese Lagerkvist. The Owls were exceptionally dominant in the top 4 spots, dropping only 11 games in the 8 sets played.
The Owls will return to action tomorrow, as they aim to even their conference record when they take on Lipscomb at 9:00 a.m. at Fair Oaks.
