ATLANTA, Ga. - The women's tennis team faces one of their stiffest tests of the season when they head down I-75 to take on the No. 70-ranked Georgia State Panthers (7-5) this afternoon. In addition to the national ranking for the Panther team, they also feature the No. 34 player in the nation in No. 1 Abigail Tere-Apisah.
The Owls (6-5) are coming off of a 6-1 win over Flagler College on March 6, while the Panthers dropped a narrow 4-3 decision to No. 35 South Carolina in their last match. The Owls and the Panthers have not faced off since 2007, when the Panthers took a 6-1 decision in the Owls' second year in NCAA Division I.
The Owls are being led in victories this season by No. 2 Alexandra Apostu, who holds a 10-1 record this spring, having won her last 10 matches after dropping her first match of the season to Tulane. Also off to strong starts for the Owls are senior captain Vera Shkundina, who holds down an 8-3 record at the top spot, and freshman Virginie Stein (9-2 at the No. 3 spot).
First serve is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at Piedmont Park Tennis Center in Atlanta, Ga.
