Owls Fall to No. 70 Georgia State, 7-0

Owls compete well, but ultimately fall to first nationally-ranked opponent

3/21/2012 11:57:00 PM

ATLANTA, Ga. - The Kennesaw State women's tennis team fought valiantly, but were unable to overcome a nationally-ranked Georgia State team as they fell to the Panthers by a score of 7-0.  The Panthers did not drop a set on the day, though the Owls did not go down without a fight.

After sweeping the doubles, the Panthers (8-5) saw strong opposition at several positions from the Owls (6-6).  Junior Therese Lagerkvist held a 3-0 advantage in the second set of her match before ultimately falling, 6-2, 6-4.  Senior Vera Shkundina was downed 6-3, 6-3 by the No. 34 ranked player in the nation, Panther sophomore Abigail Tere-Apisah.  In the end, though, the Panthers were simply too strong for the Owls on the day.

The Owls will look to get back on the winning track this weekend as they return to Atlantic Sun Conference play with matchups against Lipscomb and Belmont.  The Owls take on Lipscomb on Friday at noon at Fair Oaks Tennis Center in Marietta, the home facility for the Owls.  The match with Belmont will begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
