TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Kennesaw State men’s golf team posted a record breaking final round of 273, -11, aided by Matt Nagy’s individual record round of 63, -8, as the Owls finished in third place at the Seminole Intercollegiate.
Senior
Matt Nagy broke the school record for the lowest individual round that was set on Friday with Jeff Karlsson’s opening round of 65 -6. In Sunday’s final round at the Southwood Golf Club, Nagy posted a 63, -8, as he climbed the leader board from 28th place to finish fifth. Nagy finished with a 54-hole total of 73-71-63=207, -6, as his third round tied the Southwood course record.
“Over the first two days my ball striking was good, but I couldn’t get any putts to fall,” Nagy said. “It appears I saved them all for the last 18-holes, because I made everything I looked at. I have been putting well and to combine that with good ball striking made for a great round.”
Jeff Karlsson, who finished round one atop of the leader board placed eighth after carding a 65-70-74=209, -4. Karlsson tallied 13 sub-par scores and played the courses par-fives at three-under-par.
Freshman
Jimmy Beck posted his best round as a collegiate golfer on Sunday to finish tied for 15th with a three round total of 73-71-68=212, -1. The freshman collected nine birdies over the weekend for his second top-15 finish of the season.
Sophomore
Kelby Burton finished tied for 32nd after posting a 74-74-68=212, +3, with his final round 68 accounting for his career low. Junior
Ben Greene rounded out the scoring for the Owls with a 72-76-74=222, +9 to finish tied for 53rd.In individual action, sophomore
Jonathan Klotz placed tied for 25th with a 71-70-73=214, +1.
“Words can’t describe how proud of the team I am,” head coach
Jay Moseley said. “We knew the course was set up for good scoring conditions and we did exactly what we needed to do to score well. Any time you can break records it is a great day for your program. We showed what we are capable of today and we will use this momentum to carry us through the rest of the spring.”
Kennesaw (283-286-273=842, -10) fell short of host school No. 28 Florida State (829, -23), who finished first, just one stroke ahead of No.8 Georgia Tech (830, -22). The Seminoles claimed the individual medalist honors as well as Brooks Koepka (204, -9) beat out teammate Chase Seiffert (205, -8) by one shot.
The Owls will return to action Mar. 18-20, when they travel to Sarasota, Fla., to compete in the Callaway Collegiate Match Play Championship. For updates on the Championship, you can follow the team on Twitter @KSUOwlsMensGolf.
