Mills Highlighted In A-Sun Video Package

MACON, Ga. – Just a few days before the Kennesaw State women’s basketball team is set to make their third-straight appearance in the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament, the conference announced its postseason honors Monday night in a vote conducted by the league’s head coaches.

Redshirt-freshman Taylor Mills became the first Lady Owl in program history to be named as the A-Sun Freshman of the Year, while Mills, and freshman Kristina Wells, both earned All-Freshmen Team honors as well.

With Mills and Wells earning All-Freshman Team honors it now brings the Kennesaw State A-Sun All-Freshman Team honorees list to a total of five selections over the past seven seasons. The other three players who earned the honor were Sametria Gideon (2009-10), Brandi Jones (2009-10) and Rosetta Hollis (2006-07).

Head Coach Colby Tilley couldn’t be more pleased with his two All-Conference selections this season.

“I think it is a great compliment to Taylor and Kristina being recognized by the other head coaches in the league for their contributions to our program,” coach Tilley said. “For Taylor being the only unanimous pick, and being named Freshman of the Year, says a lot for her as a player, and for Kristina she has gotten better and better as the season has gone on. I am very happy for both Taylor and Kristina, and I see a bright future for the both of them.”

Mills was the only Lady Owl to play and start in all 29 games this season. She led Kennesaw State in several statistical categories, including points (12.3), assists (4.3), steals (2.2), and minutes played (38.4). She had one of her best games of her career on Dec. 3 at Lipscomb when she scored a career-high 28 points, to go along with five assists and four steals. Mills also etched her name into the KSU record books this season as her 74 three-point field goals made ranks her second in program history only to Joanna Cuprys who made 92 in the 1996-97 season.

The Knoxville, Ga. native made her mark on the national stage as well as she finished the regular-season ranking third in the NCAA in minutes played per game. She also finished seventh among all Division I freshmen in steals and eighth in assists.

Wells also had an outstanding freshman season as she showed how well-rounded her game is making an impact in several different areas throughout the year. She finished her rookie campaign averaging 9.2 points, 5.5 rebounds and 1.8 steals. Wells only trailed her classmate Mills in games played and started on the team with 28. Her best game of her young career came on Feb. 18 at North Florida when she recorded career-highs of 19 points and six steals.

The Douglasville, Ga. native proved why she should belong on the All-Freshman team as she finished the regular-season ranking second among all A-Sun freshmen in six different categories. Wells ranked second in points, assists and steals and they were all only second to Mills.

Stetson's Victoria McGowan was named the A-Sun Player of the Year, while Florida Gulf Coast head coach Karl Smesko was awarded the A-Sun Coach of the Year.

Mills, Wells and the rest of the Lady Owls begin their tournament run on Thursday, Mar. 1 at 12 p.m. as they take on No. 4 North Florida in Macon, Ga.
