Postgame Notes

KENNESAW, Ga. – The Kennesaw State women’s basketball team will go into the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament as the No. 5 seed despite falling, 72-64, to a hot-shooting Lipscomb squad on Saturday afternoon.

The loss drops the Lady Owls to 13-16 (8-10 A-Sun) on the year, while the loss improves the Lady Bison to 6-23 (4-14 A-Sun) for the season. Even with the loss, KSU retains the No. 5 spot in the tournament because it holds the tiebreakers over Jacksonville and USC Upstate who also finished with 8-10 conference records.

Kennesaw State got blitzed early in the game by Lipscomb’s three-point attack as the Lady Bison hit their first four three-point attempts to open up a 16-4 lead. After another Lipscomb trey made the score 26-13, KSU began to make its move as it went on an 8-0 run to make the score 26-21 with 5:15 left in the first half. However, Lipscomb kept the Lady Owls at bay with its deadly shooting from beyond-the-arc as it finished the first half shooting 69% (9-of-13) from three to take a 40-28 lead into the locker room.

The start of the second half was more of the same as the Lady Bison hit two more three-pointers to extend its lead to 48-30 with 18 minutes remaining in the game. With Lipscomb still leading 57-44, Kennesaw State finally found some rhythm offensively scoring 11 of the game’s next 14 points to pull within five.

After a Carmen Lockhart free throw made the score 65-62 with a minute and a half left, Lipscomb made another three-pointer to extend its lead to six. A Kristina Wells layup made it a four point game, but the Lady Bison made another layup to put the game out of reach.

Junior Sametria Gideon led three KSU players in double-figures with 16 points, eight rebounds and a career-high five blocks. Lockhart provided a lift off the bench for the Lady Owls recording 11 points and a career-high nine rebounds.

Kennesaw State will now go on to the conference tournament for the third-straight season as it will take on No. 4 seed
North Florida on Thursday at 12 p.m. in Macon, Ga.
