KENNESAW, Ga. – The Kennesaw State women’s basketball team got 14 points and 11 rebounds from
Sametria Gideon, but it couldn’t complete its comeback falling just short in a 58-53 loss to Belmont on Thursday night at the KSU Convocation Center.
The loss drops the Lady Owls to 13-15 (8-9 A-Sun) for the season, while the win improves the Bruins to 12-16 (11-6 A-Sun) on the year. Even with the loss KSU still remains in fifth place in the conference standings because it owns the tiebreaker over Jacksonville.
For the second straight game Kennesaw State came out of the gates sluggish as it missed 13 of its first 15 shots from the field. KSU’s offensive struggles enabled Belmont to open the first 9:17 of the game on a 29-5 run. However, the Lady Owls refused to give up as the comeback was officially on after a
Lisa Capellan jumper at the 10:34 mark sparking a 20-3 run to close the half. Sophomore
Elaina Gray was instrumental during the closing stretch as she scored six points and pulled down three rebounds to help KSU close the gap to seven points at the intermission.
Most of the second half was a back-and-forth battle as both teams turned up the intensity knowing that postseason seeding was at stake. With Belmont leading 49-39 with just over nine minutes remaining in the game, Kennesaw State made yet another run as it used a 7-0 spurt to cut the Bruins lead down to three.
However, just as soon as you thought that the Lady Owls would get over the hump redshirt-freshman
Taylor Mills fouled out of the game with 6:29 left leaving KSU without its floor general as she fouled out for the first time in her career.
Mills’ classmate
Kristina Wells wouldn’t let Kennesaw State go down without a fight as her jumper pulled it to within one with a minute left in the game. A Belmont layup, and a KSU turnover, in the final minute put the game out of reach as the Lady Owls could just never fully dig themselves out of their early hole falling by five.
Kennesaw State dominated the rebounding battle as it out-rebound the Bruins, 50-27. Junior
Chelcey Farrar was a big reason for that as she tied her career-high with 11 rebounds, to go along with eight points.
The Lady Owls close out their regular season on Saturday afternoon against Lipscomb as they will honor seniors
Tamasha Bolden and
Briona Jones on Senior Night. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
