JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The Kennesaw State women’s track team finished the 2012 Atlantic Sun Indoor Championship with a second place finish after leading the meet after day one.
The Owls were unable to fend off the late push by Jacksonville as the Dolphins won the programs seventh A-Sun Indoor Track & Field Conference Championship with 164 points. The Black and Gold stayed even with the Dolphins as they led through seven events and finished with a point total of 143 to have the closest finish to Jacksonville since 2006 when Florida Atlantic came within 14 points of the Dolphins' 133.
In all, the Black and Gold captured five individual titles and earned 16 All-Conference Honorees. The sqaud set two conference records, broke 34 school records and tallied 34 new personal best.
“I am so proud of the women as they really stepped up this weekend,” head coach Andy Eggerth said. “They were setting records left and right and they made a lot of noise around the conference this week. I think everyone realized that this team is legit and here to compete.”
To open the day, the Owls swept the first three spots to earn 24 points in the weight throw as first place went to Suzee Mills (18.07m), second place to Gwennetta Jones (16.78m) and third place to Shannon Hooper (16.33m).
Junior Michelle Quimby broke the conference record in the pole vault as her first place finish vault of 3.71m earned her the Most Outstanding Field Performer Award for the 2012 meet. Quimby also had a second place finish in the high jump as teammate Christie Leverette took first place after a jump-off between the two teammates.
Naomi Mack had a record-breaking performance as she captured first place in the pentathlon with a meet record, 3871 points. Mack won three of the five events by claiming the 60-meter hurdles (9.12), long jump (18'10.5) and 800m (2:21.85).
The Owls second highest point total in school history saw the team set two conference records and claim multiple school records as head coach Eggerth was honored as Co-Conference Coach of the Year for the women’s indoor season.
