JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The Kennesaw State men’s track and field team captured the programs third Atlantic Sun Conference Indoor Championship in five years, with a 177 point performance to beat host school and reigning champions East Tennessee State.
The Owls just edged out the Bucs to win the title by the narrowest margin in the history of the conference tournament as they won by only five. USC Upstate earned a third-place finish with 95 points to place ahead of North Florida with 91 points, while Lipscomb’s 85 points rounded out the top-five.
“I can not pick out a single individual as this was a complete team effort and win,” head coach Andy Eggerth said. “When we lost Reggie (Lewis) it was a big blow and we potentially could have lost a lot of points, but they stepped up and that’s the great thing about this team. They were amazing this weekend and it is enjoyable to see all the hardwork they put in since this summer pay off.”
Overall, the Black and Gold won three individual titles, earned 18 All-Conference Honors, Set one conference meet record, broke four KSU program records and thirty four personal records.
Senior Brian Graham opened the second day of events with a first place finish and meet record in the heptathlon. Graham finished ahead of ETSU's K'Vonte Scott by only one point en route to setting the record.
In the 60m hurdles, the Owls finished one and two with senior Kendall Parks (8.05) and Graham (8.24) finishing atop the leader board. The squad also had a back-to-back finish in the triple jump as Anjoun Armaly (14.70m) and Tyler Riberdy (14.47m) placed second and third consecutively.
The Owls also collected day two points in the 5000m run as Nabil Hamid finished second with a time of 15:02.48, the high jump as freshman Andre Dorsey (2.00m) finished second and the pole vault with Hendrik Themas fourth place finish (4.55m).
Casey Reynolds continued his success from day one as the junior took silver in the weight throw with a toss of 16.04m.
The Owls head coach Eggerth was named the A-Sun Coach of the Year for his efforts in leading his squad back to a championship. This marks the second consecutive honor coach Eggerth has collected as he was named the 2011 A-Sun Outdoor Coach of the Year after the Black and Gold’s championship victory.
