Owls Claw Back to Defeat Terriers, 5-2

Women's tennis drops the doubles point, then storms to victory in singles.

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The women's tennis team rallied for a victory today over the host Wofford Terriers, 5-2.  The Owls won five of the six singles matches contested to hand the Terriers (3-2) the loss, halting their three-match winning streak.  The Owls raise their record to 4-2 on the season.

In the doubles, the Terriers pulled out three closely contested matches to grab the early lead from the Owls.  Undaunted, the Owls returned to the court in singles and raced to straight-set victories in the first four matches completed to decide the match.  The Owls picked up the fourth and deciding point when freshman Virginie Stein closed out a tight affair with Audrey Coventry, 6-3, 7-5.  Also picking up straight set wins to set up Stein's clinching win were Vera Shkundina, Alexandra Apostu, and Therese Lagerkvist.

"This was a good test for the whole team today," commented Head Coach Jeff Kutac,  "After losing the doubles point, we showed a lot of character by bouncing back and winning the first set in all six matches in singles."

The Owls will return to the court in the morning when they face off with the Presbyterian Blue Hose.  The Owls defeated the Blue Hose, 6-1, last season.
