Postgame Notes

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Junior Lisa Capellan led four KSU players in double-figures with 13 points as the Kennesaw State women’s basketball team extended its winning streak to four games with a 66-62 win over Jacksonville on Thursday night.

The win improves the Lady Owls to 13-13 (8-7 A-Sun) for the season, while the loss drops the Dolphins to 9-18 (7-9 A-Sun) on the year. The victory gives KSU its best record after 15 conference games since the 2008-09 season when they also went 8-7 in A-Sun play.

The beginning of the game saw the Lady Owls battle foul trouble as freshman Kristina Wells and junior Sametria Gideon both picked up two quick fouls before the 16:00 mark. This left the door open for junior Ashley Holliday and freshman Carmen Lockhart as the duo provided a spark off the bench to keep KSU in the game. The pair would go on to score 15 of Kennesaw State’s next 17 points to make the score 23-22 with six minutes left in the first half.

Holliday and junior Chelcey Farrar both scored eight points in a first half that concluded with Kennesaw State trailing Jacksonville, 34-31. Surprisingly, the Lady Owls lost the battle of the boards as the Dolphins out-rebounded them, 24-16.

With the starters back on the floor to start the second half KSU couldn’t get its offense on track committing three straight turnovers. The turnovers sparked a 6-0 run for Jacksonville making the score 40-31 with just over 18 minutes left in the game.

Kennesaw State spent most of the second half trying to close the gap and it finally got there on the strength of a 10-2 run late in the second half to tie the game at 55-55 with 4:36 remaining in the contest.

KSU took its first lead of the game moments later after a long three-pointer by redshirt-freshman Taylor Mills. Kennesaw State further extended its lead after another Mills trey making the score 61-55 with just over two minutes left in the game. Three straight Lady Owl turnovers let the Dolphins get to within two in the final minute, but KSU got two clutch free throws from Mills to seal the win.

Joining Capellan in double-figures was Mills with 11 points, Holliday recorded 10 points and Farrar chipped in with 10 points and a team-high six rebounds.

Head Coach Colby Tilley was really proud of how his team fought and never gave up in the game. “We got off to a tough start in the game with early foul trouble and poor execution,” coach Tilley said. “We never gave up though, got solid play off our bench and really shot the ball well in the second half to give us a big road win tonight.”

Kennesaw State wraps up its River City road trip on Saturday afternoon as they take on North Florida at 4:30 p.m.
