BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – In what was the Owls final tune up before the Atlantic Sun Indoor Championship; the women’s track team used the Vulcan Indoor Invite as a measuring stick as to where they stand.
The Vulcan Invite played host to some of the top track and field programs in the nation with the likes of Georgia Tech, Mississippi State, Memphis and Vanderbilt in attendance. The Black and Gold undisturbed by the luster of the bigger programs stood tall as freshman Lauren Scott recorded a sixth place finish in the 5000 meter run with a time of 18:53.24, while teammate
Trice Sweet ran a time of 20:11.16 to finish 13th.
In the short track events, Cynthia Davis finished 11th in the 60m dash posting a time of 7.78 and placed sixth in the 200m dash with a time of 24.84. Freshman Kentrell White placed ninth in the 400m dash running a time of 57.55, while in the 800m, Brittany Robinson placed seventh turning in a time of 2:16.04.
In the jumps portion of the CrossPlex, senior Lashanna Barchue finished sixth in the long jump with a distance of 5.58m, whereas Rebekah Roop placed 10th in the high jump with a height of 1.65m.
The shot put was a successful event for the Owls as they placed two competitors in the top-15. Juniors Gwennetta Jones and Suzee Mills placed 12th and 14th as Jones had a toss of 12.19m and Mills had a distance of 12.17m.
The Owls will have the week to practice at their new state-of-the-art track facility before traveling to Johnson City, Tenn., on Thursday to compete in the Championship on Feb. 17-18 at the MSHA Athletics Center.
