Owl Netters Move to 3-1 with Sweep

Owls take down Alabama State and Alabama A&M by identical 7-0 scores.

2/11/2012 5:23:00 PM

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Senior Vera Shkundina picked up her 100th and 101st singles victories today, and the Owls (3-1) shut out Alabama State (0-3) and Alabama A&M (1-3) on a windy day at the Alabama State University Tennis Center.

The Owls began the day taking down a shorthanded Alabama State squad in quick fashion.  The Hornets were forced to play with only four players due to injuries, handing three of the nine matches to the Owls.  In a first for KSU, the Owls did not drop a single game against the Hornets, with each player on the Owls registering a 6-0, 6-0 victory.

The afternoon affair was a much more competitive match, with the Bulldogs pushing the Owls to a third set at the No. 2 position, before sophomore Alexandra Apostu registered a 4-6, 7-5, 1-0(4) win over Denise Cherry of the Bulldogs, finishing the 7-0 sweep for the black and gold.

The story of the day, however, was the milestone of Shkundina, who added to her KSU record career wins total.  She stands alone as the only player in KSU history to register 100 victories in singles.  After a 6-0, 6-0 win over Mechelle Barton of Alabama State, she finished off the day with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Morgan Shaw, who last week pulled off the upset over Lipscomb No. 1 Alyssa Bellini.

"Vera has been such a strong competitor for our program," commented Head Coach Jeff Kutac, "I am very proud of her for being able to reach this benchmark.  She continues to lead this team in the right direction."

The Owls will return to the court tomorrow when they travel to Troy University to face the Trojans in a 1:00 p.m. CST matchup.  The last time the two teams faced each other was during the 2010 season, with the Trojans coming out on top in a 5-2 win.  For updates, log on to www.ksuowls.com or follow the women's tennis team on Twitter at @KSUWomensTennis.
