HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. –
Kennesaw State soccer freshman forward Danielle Gray (Peachtree City, Ga./McIntosh, HS) scored her third game-winning goal of the season in the 79th minute to propel the Owls to a 1-0 win over Atlantic Sun newcomer Northern Kentucky on a chilly Friday night at NKU Soccer Stadium.

“It was a very good performance,” said Head Coach Rob King. “We spoke about not only playing well, but making sure we got the result tonight and we did both of those things. I’m very pleased. It was very important for us to get that one tonight and we want another one come Sunday.”

Despite tallying many scoring opportunities against the Norse (4-9-0, 1-4-0), Kennesaw State (6-6-1, 2-1-1) could not find the back of the net for the first 78 minutes of the match. That all changed on redshirt-sophomore Jewelia Strickland (Fayetteville, Ga./Alabama)’s corner in the 79th minute as Gray notched her team-leading seventh goal of the year on a header into the back of the net. It was Strickland’s team-leading fifth assist of the season, with four of the five assists coming on corner kicks.

Gray’s score would be all KSU needed to remain undefeated this season in true road matches.

Kennesaw State registered 16 shots, including 11 on goal, to NKU’s five shots and only one shot on frame. Gray led the way for the Owls with seven shots in the match, including five on goal. Redshirt-sophomore Katrina Frost (Fayetteville, Ga./South Carolina) added four shots, including three on goal. Jordan Hodge recorded two shots for the Norse, while Kelsey Laumann had the lone NKU shot on frame.

KSU and Northern Kentucky each earned five corners in the contest, with both teams combining for 12 fouls.

Senior goalkeeper Lauren Roberts (Rome, Ga./Marshall) notched one save in the match, while NKU’s Stephanie Glass collected 10 saves.

Kennesaw State continues its road trip on Sunday, Oct. 7 as the Owls travel to Nashville, Tenn., for a 2 p.m. ET match against Lipscomb.
