KENNESAW, Ga. - Kennesaw State's women's basketball team will try for its fourth consecutive road victory Monday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. when it battles East Tennessee State in Johnson City, Tenn. The Atlantic Sun Conference game will be featured on
ASun.TV and
KSU All-Access.
"ETSU is the one team in the conference we have yet to beat," said KSU head women's basketball coach Colby Tilley. "We're going to have to come out and work hard like we did against USC Upstate."
The Lady Owls (7-9, 2-3) are coming off an impressive, 74-63, victory over USC Upstate Saturday afternoon in Spartanburg, S.C. Taylor Mills scored a team-best 19 points, while Sametria Gideon added her second double-double of the season with 16 points and 11 rebounds. KSU dominated on the glass in the contest, getting 23 offensive rebounds and 50 total. The rebounding total contributed to KSU scoring 21 second-chance points, compared to just eight for the Spartans.
"Rebounding is all about effort," said coach Tilley. "Especially when you get 23 offensive rebounds as a team, that's just nothing but hard work coming to fruition."
Although only two players came off the bench for the Lady Owls in the game with the Spartans, KSU still matched Upstate's five bench players with 21 bench points. Elaina Gray came off the bench to go 5-of-13 from the field for 14 points, adding seven rebounds as well. Chelcey Farrar scored seven second-half points and had three rebounds in 14 minutes off the bench for coach Tilley.
By its standards, ETSU is off to a rough start this season. The Lady Bucs are just 3-11 this season, but are 2-2 in A-Sun play. ETSU started the season dropping its first 10 contests; however, the ship has been righted somewhat as ETSU has won three of its last four contests. Saturday afternoon, the Lady Bucs earned a convincing, 72-46, win over Mercer. Four players scored in double-figures for the Bucs, with Tarita Gordon's 14 off the bench leading the way.
Kennesaw State has come close at times to knocking off ETSU, but has yet to come out on top. Perhaps the most painful loss in the series for the Lady Owls came Dec. 18, 2008, in Kennesaw. KSU lost that contest in overtime, 79-78, after rallying to tie the score and force an extra session. One season earlier, the Lady Owls lost by just four in Johnson City, 81-77.
Following Monday's contest, the Lady Owls will continue their A-Sun road trip when they visit Macon for a contest with in-state rival Mercer. Tipoff this Saturday is set for 2 p.m. from the University Center.
