Lady Owls Staggered by Florida Gulf Coast

Mills scores 12 in loss

1/4/2012 6:53:00 PM

KENNESAW, Ga. - Taylor Mills scored a team-best 12 points and Lisa Capellan chipped in 10, but the Kennesaw State women's basketball team fell to Florida Gulf Coast, 87-50, on Wednesday night in Atlantic Sun Conference action at the KSU Convocation Center.

"There is not one thing that Florida Gulf Coast did that we weren't expecting," said KSU head coach Colby Tilley.  "They just executed everything they did better than we did."

The Lady Owls (6-9, 1-3) led briefly, 2-1, but FGCU would quickly take the lead back and never relinquish it again.  The Eagles (12-2, 4-0) hit on 13-of-25 from the field in the first half, including 6-of-12 from beyond the arc, and also drained 14-of-15 at the charity stripe to take a, 46-25, lead after the first 20 minutes.

The story would remain mostly the same in the second half, as FGCU would continue to shoot at a blistering pace, hitting on 14-of-24 from the field.  The Lady Owls out-rebounded the Eagles, 39-28, but could not keep up with FGCU's scoring barrage.

KSU would use their 20 offensive rebounds to score 18 second-chance points.  The Lady Owls also had more points in the paint, thanks in part to Capellan's five offensive rebounds.  KSU also kept the Eagles below their season average in 3-point baskets, as FGCU hit just 11 for the contest.

The Lady Owls also had 14 steals in the game, with four each coming from Chelcey Farrar and Mills.  FGCU would manage one additional steal, as KSU turned the ball over a season-high 31 times.  The Eagles turned the ball over 19 times in the game, one off their season-high of 20.

Mills scored all of her points on three-point shots, going 4-of-9 from long range.  She also had a game-high four assists to go with her four steals.  Capellan was 5-of-11 from the field in the loss.

Whitney Knight scored 20 points off the bench to lead the Eagles.  Sarah Hansen added 17 with Kelsey Jacobson scoring 11.

The Lady Owls will be back in action Saturday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. on the road at USC Upstate.  KSU All-Access will provide live coverage of the event.
