BATON ROUGE, La. - The Kennesaw State women's tennis team rolled to a 6-1 victory today on the campus of Southern University to even their season record at 1-1.  The Owls took 8 of 9 matches from the Jaguars (0-1), claiming five singles victories in straight sets.  Southern University is the defending SWAC Champion and competed in the NCAA National Tournament last season.

In doubles, the Owls pulled ahead early at all three positions and rolled to victory.  At the top of the lineup, the duo of senior Vera Shkundina and Alexandra Apostu downed the the team of Carlista Mohammed and Lois Alexis, 8-4.  Not to be outdone, the freshmen duo Jana Hueckinghaus and Virginie Stein were even more dominant, taking out Gabrielle Moore and Demetria Woods, 8-2.  Finishing the sweep for the Owls were Tamara Plocher and Therese Lagerkvist, who held off Morgan Taylor and Camara Davis, 8-5.

In singles, the Owls were led by Shkundina, who dropped only two games in a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Mohammed.  Also contributing straight set wins for the Owls were Apostu, Stein, Lagerkvist and Plocher, who dropped only 8 games between the foursome.  Southern picked up their only point of the day when Lois Alexis fought back from a set down to take out Hueckinghaus in a third set tiebreaker, 4-6, 7-5, 1-0(3).

The Owls have two weeks off before returning to the road on February 11, when they take on Alabama State in Montgomery, Alabama.
