Postgame Notes

DeLand, Fla. - The Kennesaw State women’s basketball team fought hard getting as close as one point in the second half, but couldn’t pull out the win falling to Stetson, 73-68, on Thursday night at the J. Ollie Edmunds Center.

The loss drops the Lady Owls to 9-12 (4-6 A-Sun) on the season, while the win improves the Hatters to 17-5 (8-2 A-Sun) for the year.

Stetson jumped out of the gates early starting the game on a 13-2 run in which Kennesaw State really struggled offensively. KSU missed eight of their first nine shots from the field during the stretch with a Lisa Capellan jumper accounting for its only made field goal.

Kennesaw State began to settle in as the game went on eventually countering with a 9-4 run of their own to make the score 17-11 with 10:42 left in the first half. Four different players scored during the run for the Lady Owls, including Chelcey Farrar who capped off the spurt with a layup.

That is the closest KSU would get for the rest of the half as cold shooting really hurt the Lady Owls as they trailed 36-25 at halftime. Kennesaw State shot 33 percent (11-of-33) from the field in the period, including going 0-of-5 from beyond the arc.

Kennesaw State did have some positives going into the locker room as it only had four turnovers in the first half, compared to Stetson’s nine. The Lady Owls also got excellent production from their bench as Carmen Lockhart led the team with six points, while Farrar chipped in with five points and a team-high five rebounds.

Coming out of the locker room it was a complete reversal for KSU as they caught fire from three-point land hitting 4-of-5 on their way to starting the second half on a 18-9 run. Taylor Mills and Ashley Holliday each hit two three-pointers in the run that got Kennesaw State to within two at 45-43 with 11:31 left to go in the game.

Unfortunately for the Lady Owls, they couldn’t maintain the momentum as Stetson eventually stretched the lead back out to as big as 16 and held on for the win.

Head Coach Colby Tilley was proud of the way his team competed tonight, but he knows his team had a chance to steal a win and they just couldn’t get over that proverbial hump that has been plaguing them all year.

“We dug ourselves into a hole early, but give the girls credit they fought back and cut it down to one in the second half,” coach Tilley said. “We just couldn’t get over the hump as a combination of poor shots and Stetson coming off those poor shots with some easy baskets really hurt us tonight.”

Farrar led the way for the Lady Owls scoring a season-high 15 points. She also tied her career-high with nine rebounds and played a career-high 37 miuntes as coach Tilley talked about her recent play after the game.

“Chelcey is playing her best basketball of the season right now,” coach Tilley said. “She is such a hard worker and a tremendous athlete so when you put those two things together good things are going to happen and they did for her tonight.”

Mills led all scorers in the game with 16 points to go along with a career-high eight assists. Victoria McGowan led Stetson with 16 points and eight assists.

Kennesaw State will stay in the Sunshine State as it will travel down to Fort Myers to take on conference leading Florida Gulf Coast on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
