KENNESAW, Ga. – The Kennesaw State women’s basketball team got a career-high 16 points from freshman center
Carmen Lockhart as it defeated Jacksonville, 78-64, on Saturday afternoon in front of 528 fans at the KSU Convocation Center.
The win improves the Lady Owls to 9-11 (4-5 A-Sun) on the year, while the loss drops the Dolphins to 7-13 (5-4 A-Sun) for the season.
It was a tale of two halves for KSU on Saturday as it committed 18 first half turnovers which led to 16 JU points. Even after all of that the Lady Owls only trailed 32-28 at the half thanks in large part to their defense holding the Dolphins to 34 percent shooting in the period.
The second half is where Kennesaw State exploded offensively as it scored 50 points on 62 percent shooting from the field. The 50 points is the highest points total in one half for the Lady Owls this season.
With Jacksonville leading 38-30 with 16:50 left in the game that is when KSU made their move going on an 18-2 run over the next five minutes. Six different players scored in the run making the score 48-40 with just under 12 minutes left to go in the game.
This is the point in the game where head coach
Colby Tilley began to go down to Lockhart in the post and she didn’t disappoint scoring 10 points in the final 11 minutes of the game helping KSU pull away from the Dolphins.
The Lady Owls sealed the win with some clutch free-throw shooting down the stretch as they shot a total of 32 free throw attempts in the game. This was the fourth time this season they have shot more than 30 free throws in a game. Redshirt-freshman
Taylor Mills took 11 of those attempts which are the most attempts by an individual KSU player this year.
“I thought we did a really nice job bouncing back today after a tough loss to North Florida on Thursday,” coach Tilley said. “We turned the ball over way too much in the first half, but we went into the locker room and really challenged the girls at halftime. I thought we came out and responded well in the second half, especially with the play of Carmen and Kristina who both had excellent games.”
Four players scored in double figures in the game for KSU, including freshman guard
Kristina Wells who chipped in with 15 points, to along with five rebounds and three steals.
Kennesaw State will now go on one of its toughest road trips of the season as it will travel to the Sunshine State to take on Stetson and Florida Gulf Coast who are currently the two top teams in the conference. The trip will start on Jan. 26 as KSU will take on Stetson at 7 p.m.
