MACON, Ga. – The Kennesaw State women’s basketball team looks to continue its recent road success as it will take a trip down I-75 to take on in-state rival Mercer on Saturday afternoon at the University Center.
The Lady Owls (7-10, 2-4 A-Sun) have won three of their last four games away from the KSU Convocation Center with their only loss coming in their last game at East Tennessee State, 77-61, on Jan. 9.
KSU put up a valiant effort against the Lady Bucs playing with only six players. Kennesaw State trailed by only seven points at the half and out-rebounded ETSU, 40-33, but the Lady Owls simply ran out of gas towards the end as the lack of depth was too much to overcome. Junior forward
Sametria Gideon led KSU recording her fourth double-double of the season finishing with 14 points and 12 rebounds in a losing effort.
Kennesaw State will now focus its attention on Mercer (3-14, 1-5 A-Sun) as it looks for its third conference win of the season. KSU has won two of the last three meetings between the two schools, but the squads spilt the season series last year as Kennesaw State won, 79-56, at the Convocation Center, while Mercer defended its home court as well edging out the Lady Owls, 82-76, in overtime.
Junior guard
Ashley Holliday has had the Bears number as of late as she has averaged 25 points a game, while shooting 45 percent from behind-the-arc in her last two games against Mercer.
Lasy Owls head coach
Colby Tilley knows the importance of their in-state rivalry and is looking for some good things from his players come Saturday.
“Ever since we went to Division I, and because of the two schools proximity to each other, it has become a natural rivalry,” coach Tilley said. “Our players seem to be more focused on this game as I am sure the Mercer players are as well. You always want to have those bragging rights which are a big deal for all the players. Every conference game is important for us in that we want to win, but this one has a little extra to it because it’s a rivalry game.”
“We expect the girls to play very hard, and to step up their play on the defensive end as Mercer has some very good scorers inside,” coach Tilley said. “Our post players will have to dig in and not take any time off which sometimes we have a tendency to do that. We will be focused and very intense as I expect a good game out of them.”
Tip-off on Saturday afternoon is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
