The Kennesaw State men’s and women’s track team will kick off their 2012 campaign at the Blazer Invitational-CrossPlex in Birmingham, Ala., Jan. 12-13 for the first time in a month since their previous meet.
The Owls will be joined by a 22 team field that includes Alabama State, Mississippi State, Southeastern Louisiana, Samford, BSC, Memphis, Jacksonville State, Louisiana Tech, FAMU, South Carolina State, Western Kentucky, Georgia State, Bethune Cookman, Hinds Community College, Austin Peay, Georgia Southern, Shorter, UAH, Huntingdon, Tiffin and Chattahoochee Tech.
The venue for the meet will be the Birmingham CrossPlex, which features a state-of-the-art indoor track stadium with seating for 4,000 people. The track facility incorporates a 200-meter hydraulically banked Mondo Super X track, making it one of only six in the United States and one of eight worldwide. Other features include an eight-lane sprint track and a four-lane warm-up track. There is a double apparatus for all field events -- shot put, long jump, triple jump, pole vault and high jump.
Reginald Lewis led the Owls last time out at the SIU Fast Start. The freshman from Albany, Ga., finished second in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.86 seconds as well as placing third in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.48, setting program records in each.
On the other side, the women opened the meet with a first place performance in the 4x400 meter relay as the team of LaTia Daniels, Sydney Williams, Kentrell White, and Alicia Whittle turned in a meet best of 3:55.79. Whittle also finished fourth in the 60m dash and sixth in the 200m dash, as her teammates Cynthia Davis, White and Victoria Jackson finished consecutively at third, fourth and fifth.
