STILLWATER, Okla. – Day two of the NCAA National Golf Championship was a day to forget for the young Kennesaw State men’s golf team. After finishing round one tied for 10th, the Owls dropped to tied for 24th shooting a 312, +24 at the Karsten Creek Golf Club.
“We didn’t have our best stuff and it was a very tough day from start to finish,” head coach Jay Moseley said. “It is a mental game and it can beat you up sometimes. I am proud of how the team fought hard and left it all out there on the course. We have played well all year and put together rounds that would compete with anybody, but today we just didn’t have it.”
Junior Jeff Karlsson was the low scorer for the Black and Gold carding 73, +1 to finish tied for 21st amongst individuals.
Freshman Jonathan Klotz posted a 78, +6 while junior Matt Nagy turned in an 80, +8. Both individuals are tied for 87th. Sophomore Ben Greene carded an 82, +9 while senior Chad Wilson shot an 82, +10.
First-round leader Georgia Tech shot a 2-over-par 290 today and still leads the field at -3, but second-ranked UCLA shot even par today and trails the fourth-ranked Yellow Jackets by only one stroke. Illinois is in third at +2 with Georgia only one stroke behind in fourth. Alabama tentatively is in fifth place, five strokes ahead of number one ranked and team host Oklahoma State.
Playing on its home course, the top-ranked Cowboys lead reigning National Champions Augusta State by three-strokes.
The six-day event features three rounds of stroke play, after which the 30-team field will be cut to the top eight for three days of match play.
The squad is 17 strokes back of the eighth spot and is in need of a stellar final round performance to keep their dreams of becoming National Champions alive.
“We are going to go out there tomorrow and give it everything we got,” Moseley said. “We are a team capable of putting together a very low number and bouncing back from today’s round.”
The Owls will tee off in the final round of stroke play on Thursday at 7 a.m. (CT) and will be paired with Arizona and Oklahoma.
