MACON, Ga. – The roster for the 2011 All-Atlantic Sun team was released on Wednesday, and a trio of Owls received honors. For the first time in the history of the men’s golf program the Owls received a First Team Honoree as juniors
Jeff Karlsson and
Matt Nagy each were named unanimous selections as First Team members while freshman
Jonathan Klotz was named to the All-Freshmen team.
Karlsson was honored for the first time in his career after posting eight top-10 finishes including three individual medalists this season. His three victories included wins at the Sam Hall Intercollegiate, Seminole Intercollegiate and the A-Sun Championship where the native of Sweden fired a three-day total of six-under-par, 207 and was named to the A-Sun All-Tournament Team.
His decorated 2010-11 campaign included a stroke average of 70.41 which is the lowest amongst all DI athletes. He currently ranks 10th in the Golfstat Cup and was a two-time A-Sun Golfer of the Week award winner. Karlsson has also been selected to represent Team Europe for the Palmer Cup June 9th at the Stanwhich Club in Greenwich, CT.
Nagy’s season featured five top-five finishes including wins at the Rees Jones Intercollegiate and at the Barefoot at the Beach Intercollegiate. He finished second at the A-Sun Championship shooting three-under-par, 210 and was named to the A-Sun All-Tournament Team.
He was also a multiple A-Sun Golfer of the Week award winner, garnering the honor twice this spring. His stroke average for the season was a 70.97 with his lowest round of 67 coming at the Irish Creek Intercollegiate.
“Jeff and Matt’s season and stats speak for themselves as they are very deserving of this honor, and their unanimous selection to the first team is no surprise at all,” head coach
Jay Moseley said.
Klotz becomes the fourth consecutive Owl to be named to the All-Freshmen team. His season included a stroke average of 74.65 with his best finish of 15th place coming at the Barefoot at the Beach Intercollegiate.
“Jonathan had a great year and it just shows the depth and the bright future of our program,” Moseley said. “All of these awards are simply a by-product of hard work, discipline and confidence that we have shown all year as a team.”
The team awaits a phone call from the NCAA front office on Monday to find out where they will be playing NCAA Regionals. The tournament will begin May 19th, with there being six possible destinations.
The Black and Gold will then have to finish amongst the top-five of their region to advance to the NCAA Men’s Golf Championship in Stillwater, Okla.
