STILLWATER, Okla. – In their first appearance at the NCAA National Golf Championship, the Kennesaw State men’s golf team finished the first wave and entered the club house in second place posting a 295, +7. After the conclusion of the second wave that included seeds one through 15, the Black and Gold are in tenth place after round one at the Karsten Creek Golf Club.
“We got off to a great start and took advantage of some good scoring conditions,” head coach Jay Moseley said. “The team did a great job adjusting to a totally different golf course from what we saw in the practice rounds. Our finish was strong and was a key to our performance.”
Once again the catalysts of the team Jeff Karlsson and Matt Nagy led the charge for the Owls. Karlsson posted the teams’ best score of 72, even-par hitting all fairways but one during the round. The native of Sweden had two pivotal birdies to equalize his two bogeys.
Nagy had the more colorful scorecard of the two as he posted a 73, +1 round that included five birdies and six bogeys. Having to play through knee complications, the five-hour round of the grueling Karsten Creek had Nagy playing in a lot of pain.
“I drove the ball well today and that was key to my round and not having to hit out of the four inch rough,” Nagy said. “I try not to think about my knee so it wont affect my swing and game.”
Senior Chad Wilson and freshman Jonathan Klotz each turned in respective rounds of 75, +3 combining for nine birdies including three in a row by Klotz on the grueling six, seven and eight holes.
“I got off to a good start and was under par after five holes and hitting the ball really well,” Klotz said. “In the middle of the round I found the rough a few times and started to struggle. I was able to regain my focus and finish strong with a respectable round to leave us in good position after the first day.”
At the end of the 54-hole stroke play tournament, the top-eight teams will advance to play in an eight-team match play tournament to determine the 2011 National Champion.
The Owls will tee of on Wednesday for round two at 1:30 p.m. (CT) and will once again be paired with Kent State and Pepperdine. Live stats can be viewed at
