Braselton, Ga. – The Kennesaw State men’s golf team leads the field at the 2011 Atlantic Sun Men’s Golf Championship with a five-stroke lead over USC Upstate, Campbell and North Florida, carding a (280 -4) at the Chateau Course of Chateau Elan.

“It is great to get off to a good start and be in a good position after round one,” head coach Jay Moseley said. “I am proud of the way the guys hung in the round with the back nine and the finishing holes being the toughest on the course. We played them well and picked up shots on the field through the final holes, and that’s what it takes to win a championship.”

The Owls’ duo of Jeff Karlsson (67, -4) and Matt Nagy (68, -3) helped guide the team to a four-under-par afternoon. The two juniors have combined to win four A-Sun awards and have positioned themselves second and third amongst individuals after 18-holes.

“Its always nice to have two guys at the top of the leader board,” Moseley said. “We are a hard team to beat when those guys are playing well.”

A quartet of individuals is tied for fourth at two-under-par, including Alex Medinis of Florida Gulf Coast, Matt Moot of Campbell, Kevin Phelan of UNF and Daniel Smith of Belmont.

Individual medalist leader Matt Hopper’s of USC Upstate’s round included only one blemish as the sophomore tallied six birdies and one bogey to help the Spartans tie for second posting a (285, +1). Their equals North Florida and Campbell all tied for second place with a team total of (285, +1).

Ben Greene was the next lowest scorer for the Black and Gold, shooting a (72, +1) to finish tied for 15th. Chad Wilson sits in 21st posting a (73, +2) while Jonathan Klotz finished tied for 39th carding a (76, +5).

2010 Champions East Tennessee State finished round one in seventh shooting a (293, +9). The Bucs were lead by Spencer Lawson, who is tied with four other individuals at one-under-par.

Last years runner-up FGCU is tied for fifth posting a (286, +2) to lead sixth place Belmont by five-strokes.

Round two begins at 8 a.m. on Tuesday with Jacksonville and Lipscomb teeing off first. The Owls will tee off at 10:15 a.m. (ET) and will be paired with USC Upstate and North Florida.
