Freshman's three-set win gives Owls the victory

KENNESAW, Ga. – The Kennesaw State men’s tennis team pulled out a dramatic Atlantic Sun Conference win over Florida Gulf Coast, 4-3, on Friday afternoon at the Laurel Park Tennis Center.

The win improves Kennesaw State to 7-6 (2-1 A-Sun) on the season, while the loss drops Florida Gulf Coast to 2-9 (0-4 A-Sun) for the year.

“I’ve never been more proud of my team in my entire coaching career than I was in this match today,” head coach #T.J. Greggs# said. “Everyone gave excellent efforts today, including Ryan who played one of the best collegiate men’s tennis matches I have ever seen.”

In doubles action, the Black and Gold swept all three doubles match in straight sets to take home the first point on the match.

Florida Gulf Coast set up the dramatics as it took three of the first five singles matches to tie the match at 3-3. The two Owls singles wins came from sophomore Gianni Kubin at the No. 1 spot and junior Tyler Mills at the No. 3 position.

The matchup at the No. 6 singles position between freshman Ryan Spencer and Florida Gulf Coast’s Mitchell Lvovsky would determine who won the match. Spencer won the first set in a tiebreak 7-6, but fell in the second set, 3-6. Fighting through cramps for most of the third set the freshman battled back to take the set in a dramatic tiebreaker, 7-6.

The Black and Gold are back in action tomorrow as it hosts Stetson at the Laurel Park Tennis Center at 11 a.m.
