KENNESAW, Ga. - Kennesaw State's women's basketball team will look for its first-ever win in the General Shale Brick Atlantic Sun Conference Championships when it tips off with Stetson in the first game of Wednesday's evening session. Start time is slated for 6:30 p.m. with a spot in Friday's semifinals on the line.
The Lady Owls (9-19) enter the A-Sun Championship as the No. 7 seed. By drawing the No. 2 seeded Hatters, KSU will be facing a team that they played close during the regular season but could never quite put away.
In the first match-up between the schools back on Jan. 17 in DeLand, Fla., KSU would be as close as three points in the second half, but Stetson scored 16 of the final 21 points en route to a, 74-60, win over the Lady Owls. Ashley Holliday led the Lady Owls in scoring that night with 14 points, with Sametria Gideon earning her seventh double-double of the season with 11 points and 15 rebounds.
The second contest this season played out very similarly. Gideon scored a career-high 22 points, but with Stetson's lead at just four points, the Hatters would score 11 of the final 13 points of the contest to take the win, 65-52. Gideon pulled down 16 rebounds in the contest, earning her 10th double-double of the season in the process.
"Stetson beat us twice in the regular season," said KSU head coach ColbyTilley. "They have a very good inside game and they have two very good guards as well. It's going to be a challenge for us to get by them in the first round because they are a [No. 2] seed for a reason."
Stetson (17-12) is anchored by a pair of all-conference honorees. Victoria McGowan earned A-Sun Second Team honors while Sasha Sims was named to the A-Sun All-Freshmen Team.
The winner of the quarterfinal contest will play Friday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. against the winner of the quarterfinal between No. 3 Campbell and No. 6 Belmont.
