Lady Owls Head for Mercer

KSU vies for fifth A-Sun win

2/9/2011 8:08:40 PM

KENNESAW, Ga. - After a big win Monday night, Kennesaw State's women's basketball team will try for its second win in a row Thursday night when it takes on in-state rival and Atlantic Sun Conference foe Mercer.  Tip-off at the University Center in Macon is scheduled for 5 p.m., with live audio available for free BY CLICKING HERE.

The Lady Owls (7-14, 4-9) moved past Belmont in the A-Sun standings Monday night with a, 71-60, victory over Campbell.  Ashley Holliday had 25 points for the Lady Owls in the victory, while Angie Smith chipped in 23 points and five assists.  21 of Holliday's points came via the 3-point shot, as the sophomore has now connected on 16 3-pointers in her last two home games.  A win over the Bears Thursday night would catapult the Lady Owls past Lipscomb in the A-Sun standings and move KSU within one game of Jacksonville for what would be the No. 5 seed in the A-Sun Tournament.

Holliday started her hot shooting against Mercer when the two squads last met.  In that contest, Holliday tied the KSU all-time record and set the school's new Division I record with nine 3-pointers.  That output from long range tied the highest 3-point shot output in the nation this season.

In Mercer's last contest, Briana Williams scored 35 points, but it wasn't enough as the Bears fell to Campbell, 77-64.  Williams has scored 76 points in her last two home contests, yet Mercer (1-21, 1-12) still hasn't been able to put another notch in the win column.  The last win for the Bears came Dec. 2 at Belmont, 69-56.

The two squads split last season's home-and-home series, with KSU losing at Mercer, 60-38, and Mercer losing in Kennesaw, 52-51.  KSU's last win in Macon came March 1, 2008 when the Lady Owls defeated the Bears, 77-70, in the season finale.

ASun.TV will provide coverage of Thursday's contest for a nominal fee.  Free live audio will be available via KSUOwls.com, beginning approximately two minutes before tipoff.
