LUTZ, Fla. – The Kennesaw State men’s golf team captured their third championship of the season with a final round victory, 3&2 over Ball State University to win The Match Play at TPC of Tampa.
“I am so proud of what this team did this week,” head coach Jay Moseley said. “Every one of our guys played well and fought hard in every match.”
The final round of the championship bracket the Owls drew Ball State. The first two pairings halved their matches as Matt Nagy competed against Eric Steger and Peder Lunde Hermansson matched up with Tyler Merkel to earn half a point each.
Tied after the first two matches, the Owls relied on wins from two of thier three remaining players to take home the title. Senior Chad Wilson defeated T.J. Carpenter 4&3 and sophomore Ben Greene won 4&3, whle freshmen Jonathan Klotz fell to Joe Gasser 4&3.
The Black and Gold advanced to the championship after beating Marquette 4.5 & .5. Nagy won 6&5, Wilson won 6&4, and Greene won 3&1 while Klotz won 2&1.
“We controlled all of our matches with clutch shot making and we were confident at all times, which was key to our wins in match play,” Moseley said. Our minds were focused all week and I truly could not be happier with our performance. Winning always feels great.”
Greene was a perfect 4-0 for the tournament, while both Wilson and Klotz finished with records of 3-1.
The Owls are putting together their most remarkable season in school history. The Black and Gold began the season with a win at the Sam Hall Intercollegiate and followed it up with a win at the Rees Jones Intercollegiate a few weeks after.
The team has a four-week break before returning back to action. The Owls will be competing in the Barefoot at the Beach Intercollegiate March 6-8, at Myrtle Beach’s Surf Club Golf Course.
