LUTZ, Fla. – The Kennesaw State men’s golf team has advanced to the championship bracket of The Match Play at TPC of Tampa Bay. The Black and Gold won their first round match against Charleston Southern 3-2 and advanced past Atlantic-Sun foe Campbell in the second round.
The first round match up against the Bucs came down to the final pairing, after the Owls dropped their first two matches. Freshmen Jonathan Klotz defeated Will Pieper 2&1 to seal the first round win.
Junior Matt Nagy lost the number one pairing to Jacob Pastor 1UP, while teammate Peder Lunde Hermansson fell short to Jonathan Rustin 3&1, forcing the Owls to win three consecutive pairings to prevail in the match.
In the third pairing, Senior Chad Wilson defeated David Delinger 3&2 to give the squad their first win of the afternoon. Sophomore Ben Greene tied the match up with a win over Jason Clatworthy 4&3 to compel Klotz to determine the match.
The second round win over Campbell was awarded to the Owls after Nagy defeated Matt Moot 6&5, Klotz defeated Ben Poland 5&4, and Greene won 5&3 over Mitch Gray to advance the Black and Gold tp the champioship bracket. Wilson lost 3&2 against Amanjyot Singhand Hermansson fell short to Vaita Guillaume.
“I was very pleased with everyone today,” head coach Jay Moseley said. “We didn’t play our best, but it was enough to win. Our guys out front played well and it really showed our depth.”
The Owls (81) advance to take on Marquette (154) in the third round at 8:30 a.m. Marquette beat the highest seeded Notre Dame (26) in round two.
