KENNESAW, Ga. - Kennesaw State's women's basketball team will look to get off to a winning start in Atlantic Sun Conference play when it takes to the court to play Belmont this Thursday at 6 p.m. at the Curb Event Center in Nashville.
The Lady Owls (2-3) are coming off a pair of losses to Atlantic Coast Conference foes. While KSU lost to No. 16 North Carolina last Sunday, the hopes of the team rose with the effort. In that contest, KSU led for the majority of the first half and cut UNC's 26 point lead down to 10 before falling, 76-62. Ashley Holliday connected on eight 3-pointers for 26 points and Sametria Gideon added a double-double in defeat.
KSU currently has a quartet of players averaging in double-figures in scoring. Holliday and Gideon are both averaging over 14 points per contest, while Taylor Mills is scoring at a 12.2 points per game clip and Kristina Wells is averaging 10.8 points over the first five games of the season.
Defensively, KSU has also forced more steals. KSU has 71 steals as a squad, with four players (Mills, Wells, Holliday and Lisa Capellan) all over 10 steals for the season. The Lady Owls also have more offensive rebounds than their opponents by an eight rebound margin.
Belmont (1-6) enters the contest having played a challenging schedule of their own. Most recently, the Bruins fell at Florida, 72-45. Belmont has also played Auburn, Memphis, and Indiana as part of its the early season schedule.
The contest will feature the A-Sun's two active leaders in career double-doubles. Gideon and Belmont's Haley Nelson each have 18 double-doubles for their career entering the contest. Nelson currently leads the Bruins in scoring with 12.1 points per game.
