DAUFUSKIE ISLAND, S.C. - The Kennesaw State men's golf team overcame an 11-stroke deficit in the final round Tuesday to claim their second consecutive Rees Jones Intercollegiate title after posting a 310-295-289=894, +30 at the Haig Point Golf Club.

The Owls ousted host school South Carolina in the final 18-holes by posting the tournament’s low round of 289, to beat the Gamecocks by four strokes.

“I am so proud of what this team did today that words cannot truly describe it,” head coach Jay Moseley said. “We talked last night about what this team is capable of and then we went out today and proved it. We knew we could win if we played to our potential so it feels great to win the way we did. To come back from ninth place in round one and win is a testament to how much we believe in ourselves.”

Ben Greene led the charge for the Black and Gold as the junior recorded his best finish ever with a second place showing, carding a 77-69-73=219, +3.

“Ben has had mixed results this year prior to this week,” coach Moseley said. “For him to play the way he did was key to our win and our success this week. I am very proud of him for being patient and working hard.

Senior Matt Nagy posted an 81-70-73=224, +8 to finish tied for 12th as the Atlantic Sun First Team Honoree recorded his third consecutive top-20 finish of the 2011 campaign.

In only his second collegiate tournament in as many years, junior Sam Curtis posted his top finish with a tie for 20th after carding an 81-76-71=228, +12. Freshman Jimmy Beck, also competing in only his second collegiate tournament finished just one stroke behind Curtis in a tie for 26th, posting a 76-81-72=229, +13, while senior Jeff Karlsson rounded out the scoring for the Owls with a tie for 30th, shooting a 76-80-74=230, +14.

The Owls led the tournament in par-three scoring (3.17, +10), par-four scoring (4.23, +35) and pars converted (171), while also sinking 31 birdie opportunities.

Iowa State’s Nate McCoy held on to win the individual title as the Cyclone turned in a 54-hole score of 68-70-72=210, -6 to register the only sub-par score of the tournament.

The squad will return to action Oct. 30th for the Kiawah Island Intercollegiate at the Turtle Point Golf Club in Kiawah Island, S.C.
