DAUFUSKIE ISLAND, S.C. – The Kennesaw State men’s golf team played 36-holes at the Rees Jones Intercollegiate on Monday, posting a 310-295=605, +29, team score at the Haig Point Golf Club.
“We played an uncharacteristic poor first round,” head coach Jay Moseley said. “We had guys struggle throughout the entirety of their round. We are lucky to be in contention after we dug ourselves a hole, but anything can happen tomorrow on this course. We just need to hit fairways and greens while staying patient on this difficult course.”
The Owls concluded round one in ninth place before putting together the second best round of the afternoon to climb the leader board after round two. The squad was led by the play of Ben Greene, as the junior is in fourth place after shooting a 77-69=146, +2.
Senior Matt Nagy is tied for 19th after carding an 81-70=151, +7. Both Nagy and Greene had six birdies each in their two rounds, as Greene leads the tournament in par-3 scoring with an average of 2.88.
“Ben and Matt’s second rounds were outstanding,” Moseley said. “ They helped us turn things back around in the right direction.”
Jeff Karlsson is tied for 37th, as the senior turned in a 76-80=156, +12 total. Sam Curtis and Jimmy Beck are both tied for 42nd as each turned in totals of 157, +13.
Iowa State (594, +18) holds a four-stroke lead over host school South Carolina (598, +22) with Wake Forest and Georgia State just behind.
The individual leader is Iowa State’s Nate McCoy as the Cyclone was the only competitor to register a sub-par score as he posted a 68-70=138, -6 to hold a seven stroke lead over second place.
