NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Kennesaw State women's tennis team recorded their second win in as many days with a 5-2 win over the University of New Orleans on Friday evening at the University Tennis Center.
The win improves Kennesaw State to 2-0 on the year, while the loss was the season opener for New Orleans.
"This match was a great team effort from top to bottom and I was proud of how our team competed," head coach Jeffery Kutac said. "We got a clutch doubles win from Agatha and Alex to take the doubles points, and we fought hard to close out the match in singles play."
The victory gave the Owls a Division I program first as the Black and Gold have never started a season with a record of 2-0 since joining the D-I ranks in 2005.
This match also featured something you don't see every day in collegiate tennis as New Orleans only has four players on their active roster so that automatically gave Kennesaw State a 2-0 lead before they even stepped out on the court.
The doubles point wound up coming down to the No. 2 doubles match. Senior Agatha Palider and freshman Alexandra Apostu overcame a 7-6 deficit to post a 9-7 comeback win giving the Owls a 3-0 lead.
In singles action, junior Vera Shkundina sealed the win recording Kennesaw State's fourth point of the match by winning her match at the No. 1 spot 6-1, 6-0 over Kozue Matsumoto.
Apostu won both of her matches on the day, including an impressive 6-0, 6-3 singles win at the No. 3 spot. She has now won all four of her matches this season to begin her collegiate career.
Kennesaw State will return to action on Feb. 4 as they will head back out on the road to take on the University of Alabama-Birmingham. The match is scheduled to start at 12 p.m. central time.
