KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Kennesaw State women’s soccer team concluded its weekend at the First Tennessee Lady Vol Classic against the No. 14 Maryland Terrapins, but came up short in their upset bid, falling, 4-0, on Sunday afternoon at Regal Stadium on the campus of the University of Tennessee.
The win improves the Terrapins to 4-0 for the season, while the loss drops the Owls to 2-1-1 on the year.
Kennesaw State had
Alyssa Mahan,
Katie Scott and
Brittany Vining, all juniors, selected to the First Tennessee Lady Vol Classic All-Tournament Team.
Owls senior goalkeeper
Staci Pugh made five saves, and Mahan led the team with three shots in the match.
The Owls had the first quality scoring chance of the match in the fifth minute. Vining dribbled through several Maryland defenders, and crossed the ball perfectly to sophomore
Lexi Hastings just outside the box. Hastings collected the ball and fired a shot off her right foot that sailed just high.
Maryland opened up the scoring in the 23rd minute as Jasmyne Spencer hammered home a rebound that came off an Ashley Grove shot to give the Terps a 1-0 lead.
The Terrapins added two more goals, another by Spencer and one by Caitlin Mcdowell, in the 26th and 33rd minutes to take a 3-0 lead.
Junior
Thais Gibson nearly got one back for the Black and Gold, as she blasted a shot from 30 yards out, but the ball hit the crossbar and the score remained 3-0 heading into the half.
Maryland extended its lead to 4-0 right out of the lockerroom on Mcdowell’s second goal of the game, on a shot that beat Pugh on the top-right corner of the goal in the 47th minute.
The Terps outshot the Owls in the match by a total of 19-7.
The Owls will now return home as they will gear up for Mountain West opponent Wyoming on Sunday, Sept. 5. at 1 p.m. at KSU Soccer Stadium.
Sunday afternoon’s match is also KSU Soccer Stadium Replica Giveaway night, with the first 1,000 fans to enter the stadium receiving a replica of the Owls new home.
