SUWANEE, Ga. – Kennesaw State Owls rising sophomore Greg O'Connor played stellar golf this week, shooting rounds of 67-70-71 for a score of 5-under par 208 to win the Collegiate Players Tour/Laurel Springs Collegiate Open in Suwanee by seven strokes.
The event, held on the 6,850 yard course at the Jack Nicklaus-designed Laurel Springs Golf Club in Suwanee, was part of the Collegiate Players Tour, a series of summer events held around the country designed to give college players a place to keep their golf game sharp during the collegiate off-season.
"Going into the event I felt good about where my game was and felt good about the work that I have done this summer,” said O’Connor. “The two things that really helped me win this week were my driving accuracy and my wedge game, which led to a lot of birdies."
O’Connor’s triumph is one of several examples of strong play from the Owls during the summer. Most recently, Owls star Jeff Karlsson, who is spending the summer in his native Sweden, played two very strong rounds of golf at the European Tour’s Scandinavian Masters, nearly making the 36-hole cut in the premiere event. Stateside, Matt Nagy finished tied for eighth at the Players Amateur, one of the strongest amateur tournaments in the country.
Owls head coach Jay Moseley, who will begin his second year at the helm of the program in the fall, was pleased with the way O’Connor played during the week and was glad to see the progress he has made in his game this summer.
"Greg has worked very hard over the last nine months to overcome some difficult challenges with his golf game. For him to go out and shoot the scores he did and win in convincing fashion is great for his confidence,” said Moseley. “I know he was very excited to finally see some good results and I am very happy for him."
