ROSWELL, Ga. – Kennesaw State Owls sophomore Ket Preamchuen showcased her talents on the national stage on Monday, firing a 4-over par 76 in the U.S. Women’s Amateur Qualifier at Brookfield Country Club in Roswell, Ga., to finish in a tie for ninth. She won a playoff to earn a spot as the second alternate to go to the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship, Aug. 9-15 in Charlotte.
Preamchuen, who led head coach Rhyll Brinsmead’s squad during the 2009-2010 season with a program-record scoring average of 74.7, shot 38 on each nine holes, carding a birdie against three bogeys and one double-bogey. Her 13 pars on the day signaled her consistency hitting the ball during the round, but she also thought she could’ve cashed in on some opportunities with her putter.
“There were a lot of times where I had 15 feet or less for birdie, and I just didn’t convert,” said Preamchuen, who hails from Thailand. “It was encouraging to hit the ball well, and I know if I putt better, I’ll be in a position to shoot much lower scores. It’s exciting that there is a possibility of me playing in the U.S. Amateur Championship, but either way, it was a great experience for me and one that I know I can learn from.”
Preamchuen collected a bevy of awards during her freshman campaign with the Owls. Her fourth place finish at the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship helped propel her to All A-Sun First Team and A-Sun All Freshman honors. She also excelled in the classroom, earning A-Sun Academic honors and being recognized as a National Golf Coaches Association All American Scholar.
A total of seven players qualified for the Championship on Monday in Roswell, with a 2-over par 74 being the high score that earned a spot.
